Successful breeding isn’t just about genetics. It’s about planning, timing, accuracy, and keeping everything in order from day one. Whether you’re a first time breeder or a seasoned professional, following the correct process protects both the breeder and the buyer, while ensuring your foal is eligible for AQHA registration.
Here’s what every breeder needs to know.
Before You Start: Setting the Foundation
Before breeding takes place, it’s essential to ensure eligibility and compliance:
- Both parents must be AQHA registered, or one must be a Foundation Recorded horse.
- Advanced reproduction requires permits. Embryo Transfer (ET) & Oocyte Transfer (ICSI) both require permits with the AQHA prior to breeding.
- The breeder at time of foaling is responsible for submitting a complete & correct application for registration.
Planning ahead here avoids delays, penalties, or ineligibility later on.
Mare Owner Responsibilities
As a mare owner, preparation is key:
- Ownership must be recorded with AQHA prior to foaling
- DNA must be on file for parentage verification before breeding
- Genetic testing is essential to identify potential carriers of hereditary conditions
Key conditions to be aware of include:HYPP, MYHM, MH, PSSM1, HERDA, OLWS, and GBED
Understanding your mare’s genetic status allows you to make informed breeding decisions & reduce the risk of producing affected foals.
Additionally, if you are selling a mare but retaining breeding rights, a Retained Breeding Rights Declaration must be completed.
Stallion Owner Responsibilities
Stallion owners play an equally important role in the breeding process:
- Initial Breeding Fee (IBF) must be completed before breeding or semen collection
- Breeders can confirm IBF status via the AQHA Online Studbook
- Genetic testing is required.
Transparency around genetic status ensures responsible breeding practices across the industry.
The stallion owner must sign & lodge the breeding return, prior to the 31st May following the breeding.
Missing this deadlines may result in additional fees.
Resulting Foal: Registration Requirements
Once your foal arrives, accurate documentation is critical:
- If the foal is sold, a Breeder’s Declaration or Signed Transfer must accompany registration
- All forms must be complete & correct. Incomplete submissions will not be processed.
Timeliness is also important:
- Foals born 1 August – 28 February must be registered by 31 May
- Foals born 1 March – 31 July must be registered by 31 October
Missing these deadlines may result in additional fees.
Membership & Fees
To finalise any breeding or registration process:
- You must hold a current AQHA membership
- Payment is required prior to processing any applications
Keeping your membership current ensures smooth processing and uninterrupted access to AQHA services.
Breeding with Confidence
Breeding is built on integrity, transparency & responsible horsemanship. By following the correct processes, from genetic testing to paperwork, you’re not just producing a foal, you’re contributing to the long term strength & reputation of the Quarter Horse.
A well planned breeding program sets the next generation up for success!
